Stand Up - Episode 10
After California, the Grand Canyon, and an extensive Mexican adventure, Guatemala takes the stage. Gip and Miki arrive concurrently with the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, blissfully unaware of the global catastrophe. They face the apocalyptic scene with their signature nonchalance.
To escape the chaos of ravaged roads and the looming epidemic, they head towards Lake Atitlan and immerse themselves in the subdued realm of the world's largest hippie community. Here, they encounter the descendants of the founders, delving into a life choice based on communal living, free-spirited drug use, and the rejection of societal norms. It offers a glimpse into what appears to be a somewhat imposed legacy rather than a conscious choice made by their parents.
Continuing their journey, the Stand Up protagonists reach Chichicastenango, one of Guatemala's most notorious locales. Here, they succumb to the persuasions of a supposed Mayan priest to partake in a propitiatory white magic ritual for their voyage. From this point, the journey takes an unexpected turn as their trusty motorhome experiences mechanical breakdowns, leaving Stand Up stranded in a place no tourist guide would recommend.
In the episode's conclusion, Gip and Miki share a legend from Playa Zicatela: the "masked surfer," a true hero dedicating his life to helping those in need, both in the waves and in life.
